Home Remedies for Bedwetting
Bedwetting is a very common problem among infants and small children. It is a process of unknowingly passing urine while sleeping.
This often occurs because children have small bladders and cannot hold
theirurine all night or the urge to urinate is not strong enough to wake
them up.
Children often out grow bedwetting as they age, but it can be
embarrassing and cause your child to shy away from social activities
such as slumber parties. You can help your child stop wetting the bed with some easy and simple natural remedies.
Your child may be a bedwetter because:
- You were one – 75% of all childhood bedwetters have a parent who also was one.
- The communication link between their brain and bladder isn’t mature enough yet to function properly during sleep.
- He or she is a very deep sleeper; therefore, their brain just doesn’t receive the “full bladder” signal.
- He or she may have a lower level of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). ADH tells the kidneys to stop producing urine when you sleep.
- He or she has a smaller bladder that can’t hold urine through the night.
- Your child is constipated and the bowel is putting pressure on the bladder.
Although many parents once thought that childhood bedwetting was due
to laziness, this is far from the truth. What child would actually want
to sleep in a wet bed all night? Thankfully, this attitude has changed
for the most part.
Diet for Bedwetting
Several recent reports claim that there is a correlation between
bedwetting and a diet. Health experts also admit that there are certain
food items, which can help to strengthen the bladder. Therefore, eating
higher amounts of such bladder strengthening food can help reduce the
problem of bedwetting. Moreover, by treating digestive problems, like
constipation, through a high-fiber diet, you could also eliminate the
problem of nocturnal enuresis in most children. Given below are a few
dietary suggestions that you can incorporate in your childs diet:
- Increase the amount of fibrous food consumed, like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cereals, as they flush out the harmful toxins from the body
- Include higher amounts of milk, sesame, bananas and almonds in the childs diet, as they help to stop bedwetting
- Restrict the consumption of meat, sweets, foods with artificial additives, processed food, junk foods, soy and eggs
- Strictly avoid colas, sodas and fruit juice as they can worsen the problem.
Following a healthy diet, high in fresh fruits and vegetables is good
for all children in general, as it improves their resistance, overall
health and wellbeing. Such foods also provide adequate nutrition for the
different organs and systems in the body to develop. Therefore,
following a diet that is high in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients
can have a beneficial effect on the childs overall health.
However it is important to understand that a role of a diet in
bedwetting is still being determined. Due to limited research, it is not
possible to make claims either way.
7-Jaggery -Celery and Black Sesame
- Make a mixture of jaggery, celery seeds and black sesame seeds in equal quantities. Give 1 teaspoon of this mixture to the child with a cupful of milk in the morning. Continue this for 1-2 months. This should preferably be given in the winter or cold weather as it has a heating effect on the body.
- As worm infestation is also a possible cause, deworming is helpful in children suffering from bed-wetting. For this, give a piece of jaggery (about 20 grams) to the child in the morning. After one hour give the child ½ teaspoon of celery seeds with a pinch of rock salt. Repeat this once a week for 4 weeks.

Diet and Lifestyle:
The child should avoid intake of fluids 2 hours before going to bed. Parents should help the child develop the habit of passing urine before going to bed. Do not scold or humiliate your child for bedwetting. Instead, lovingly guide the child to overcome this problem. Reassure your child that it is not a big problem and can be solved. Do not disclose the child’s problem to relatives and friends or to the child’s siblings.
